Teen alcoholism and drug use linked to Smoking

A research paper showed that teenagers who smoke are five times more likely to drink and 13 times more likely to use marijuana than those who do not smoke.
The report by Columbia University's National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse presented further evidence linking youth smoking to other substance abuse and spotlighted research on how nicotine affects the adolescent brain.Teenage smoking is not only linked to alcohol or dugs but also may be a cause of mental illness like depression and anxiety.
Smokers ages 12 to 17 are more likely drink alcohol than nonsmokers -- 59 percent compared to 11 percent, the report found. Those who become regular smokers by age 12 are more than three times more likely to report binge drinking than those who never smoked -- 31 percent compared to 9 percent.
Marijuana is the most used drugs among the teenagers, most of whom are smokers.
The report cited scientific studies showing the nicotine in tobacco products can produce structural and chemical changes in the developing brain that make young people vulnerable to alcohol and other drug addiction and mental illness.
Parents and teachers should spread the evil effect of smoking among the teenagers and should keep a constant vigil on their bad company.

House work can cause Asthma

An weekly cleaning of house by using spray may cause asthma,a research study suggests. A study found using household cleaning sprays and air fresheners as little as once a week raised the risk of asthma. Previously it was found out that continuous use of sprayers or house freshners can cause occupational asthma. But now it is found out that even their occasional use also poses a threat of asthma.
The Spanish study of more than 3,500 is published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Air freshners, furniture cleaner and glass cleaner have higher risk. For anybody concerned about developing asthma as a result of using cleaning products we recommend they speak to their doctor.
This is a concerning news because we cant avoid cleaning our house. We should take genuine precaution and if possible should contact our physician.

The ancient wellness medicines in new form

Now a days people are gradually understanding that though clinical medicines are reliable to certain extent its secondary side effect is dangerous. They are trying to prevent the disease rather than cure it. For that cause man is depending on the nature rather than chemicals. Our ancient sages were studying the various effects of fruits on human body and reached a conclusion that yes certain fruits can provide human with wellness.
They wrote those conclusions on palm leaves. When modern man found those he took those findings to laboratory and examined, researched and declared that ancient findings were true and modern day human should adopt this. Gogi berry is one among those fruits found in the HIMALAYS.

Goji is a juice whose roots extend into the archives of antiquity. Healers have been using the Goji berry for centuries now to increase the quality of life in natives. Goji has a very high antioxidant level and is riddled with trace minerals and nutrients.

Goji berries contain up to 21 trace minerals (the main ones being zinc, iron, copper, calcium, germanium, selenium, and phosphorus). Goji berries contain 18 kinds of amino acids (six times higher than bee pollen) and contain all 8 essential amino acids (such as isoleucine and tryptophan). Goji also contains vitamin C,B1,B2,B6 AND E.

Cancer risk is reduced by house work

Researchers found out that physical house work or exercise reduces the risk of cancer up to 30 percent.Another study shows that the chance of breast cancer is very low among the women doing physical works or exercise.
All the findings were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research's annual meeting in Orlando. According to the researchers more you work or exercise more you are protected.

The researchers at Vanderbilt University in the US and the Shanghai Cancer Institute in China looked at 832 women with endometrial cancer and a control population who did not have the disease.According to the researchers chance of disease can be reduced by adopting an active lifestyle. But it does not mean that we should work or exercise in excess.
It is a good news for stay-at-home-moms or housewives because they work hard in their home.

Drugs can reduce the risk of heart attack

A study has found that drugs like Statin can give protection for heart attack long after patients stop taking them. The drugs can reduce the risk of heart attacks by a quarter in men according to the researchers.
The University of Glasgow study found long-term benefits in taking statins.
People who were taking statin for five years have a benifit of 10 years even they stop taking them for a reduced heart risk. Professor Stuart Cobbe, the leading cardiologist on the study, said: "We were very surprised to find patients who had been treated for five years with a statin continued to have significantly fewer heart attacks and other coronary events compared to those treated with a placebo treatment.
Study involved 6,595 men from the region, with an average age of 55, who had high cholesterol between the period 1989-1991 and were on constant health vigil still 1995. It was found that the people who were taking statin have a lower heart risk and disease effect.
This suggests that statin treatment has a long-term beneficial effect in slowing the development of coronary artery disease.

Jaundice- A common disease

Jaundice is a common disease seen not only in adults but also in new born babies. It is a yellowing of the skin, whites of the eyes, and body fluids. It is caused by an increase in the amount of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment that is produced from the breakdown of heme, mostly from hemoglobin and red blood cells (RBCs).It may be due to acute hepatitis, liver inflammation due to a variety of causes including hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viral infections, alcohol abuse, and some medications and toxins. It is a matter of concern considering the new born babies. The newborn baby, however, often becomes jaundiced during the first few days because the liver enzyme which metabolizes bilirubin is relatively immature.Furthermore, newborn babies have more red blood cells than adults, and thus more are breaking down at any one time. The new born may be jundiced when it is infant of a diabetic mother. Some fears that jaundice is due to breast feeding but it should not stop.
Problems associated with high bilirubin are very rare. However, they are potentially very serious. Be sure to report any jaundice to your pediatrician for care.

High risk of depression due to work stress

A study reveals that people who feel chronic stress in their work place are at a high risk of getting depression. Researchers found that among more than 24,000 working Canadian adults, nearly 5 percent had suffered from major depression in the past year. Those under heavy stress at work appeared to be at particular risk, according to findings in the American Journal of Public Health. Other diseases like blood-pressure and heart also associated with chronic stress in work place. The result is quite different in case of women because depression is related with decision taking ability. One measure of job stress -- lack of support from co-workers and supervisors -- was related to depression in both men and women.
Proper medical attention should be given to the employees by the employer to skip this dreaded disease.

Study:First puff can turn a kid to a smoker

A new study suggests that a single puff of cigarrette may change a kid to be an addicted smoker.
Researchers say almost a third of kids interviewed who tried smoking said their first cigarette brought them a feeling of relaxation -- and two-thirds of those kids went on to become smokers.
Dr. Joseph DiFranza,a professor in Massachusetts stated the dependance
depends on the first cigarrette.
Between 2002 and 2006, the study authors tracked the smoking habits of 217 sixth-graders, averaging 12 years of age, who they recruited from six schools in Massachusetts. Nearly three-quarters of the children were non-Hispanic whites, and all reported having inhaled a cigarette at least once.

Teen smoking is often an early warning sign of future problems. Teens who smoke are three times as likely as nonsmokers to use alcohol, eight times as likely to use marijuana, and 22 times as likely to use cocaine. Smoking is also associated with numerous other high risk behaviors, including fighting and having unprotected sex.
Parents or guardians should be vigilant enough and should track the activities of their children, particularly with the companions.

Obesity and pregnancy

St. Louis researchers have found that obese women who gained little or no weight during pregnancy could escape complications. They were at lower risk for developing high blood pressure and delivering by cesarean section and more likely to have a normal-weight baby. The study found that women of different weights should gain or even lose different amounts of weight. It is a matter of note because previously it was concluded that women should gain certain amount of weight(at least 15 lb) during pregnancy. Relying on birth certificate data, the study analyzed the pregnancies of more than 120,000 obese women from Missouri to see how weight gain affected pregnancy-related high blood pressure, cesarean delivery and the baby's birth weight. Three categories of women were examined ,not heavy to heaviest and conclusions are found as follows.

The least-heavy obese women had best outcomes when they gained 10 to 25 pounds.

The next heavier group of obese women had the best outcomes if they gained zero to 10 pounds.

The heaviest obese women had the best outcomes if they lost weight.
The Missouri study found that the least-heavy obese women who restricted their weight gain were at somewhat higher risk to have a low birth-weight baby. But too obese women who gained
weight have a risk of having low-birth-weight baby.
Obesity increases the risk of miscarriage and can at least double the woman's chances of gestational diabetes or a condition called pre-eclampsia, which can be life-threatening to mother and fetus. If someone is extremely obese should try to lessen the weight during pregnancy.
