Common cold and kids

The common cold is a type of upper respiratory tract infection that is probably the most frequent type of infection in children. It is caused by rhinovirus when we inhale in air or come in contact. It is the most common infectious disease in the United States and the number-one reason children visit the doctor and stay home from school. More than hundred rhinoviruses attack the nose and throat causing the cold and throat infection.
The symptoms of the common cold include a runny nose with clear, yellow or green discharge, a cough, fever, sore throat and irritability. Symptoms usually last ten to fourteen days and will resolve on their own. Because the common cold is caused by viruses, antibiotics are not effective against it and they will not help us get better any faster. Since there is no medicine to cold we can supress it or get some relief.Vicks Vapor rub can be used to get relaxed. This vapor rub work 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even verystrong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremelysoothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. Some inhalers are also used by children. Vicks has no side effect.

Childhood obesity and diabetes

According to an estimate 65 percent of adults and 15 percent of children between the age group of 6 to 19 are obese in USA. The percentage of young people who are overweight has more than tripled since 1980, the agency reports. The International Obesity Taskforce warns that 10 percent of school-age children worldwide are overweight or obese, with rates continuing to soar. Health experts are concerned because obesity is the leading controllable risk factor for type 2 diabete. It is estimated that one in three children born in 2000 are prone to
diabetes and this figure will increase in case of racial minorities. Obesity may also accelerate the development of a phenomenon called double diabetes, in which children with type 1 diabetes develop insulin resistance. Obesity has grown more prevalent in people with type 1 diabetes along with the general population. Excess fat makes it harder to use insulin. Excess weight may also cause the pancreas to deteriorate.
The diabetes in children has greater risk factors. The more the man suffer more the complications. There is a possibility of damage of eyes, nerves and blood vessales. According to an agency hospital cost has nearly tripled due to childhood obesity.
All parents should be careful and should restrict the use of junk food for better health and future.

Acupuncture may help to low backpain

Acupuncture is one of the most time-tested treatments known to mankind. If the value of a treatment were based solely on how long it has been around, and how long people have thought that it was helpful, then acupuncture would probably be the most effective treatment known to humankind. Nonetheless, we still do not know why acupuncture works, how it works best, and for whom it is best used.
A study finds that acupuncture can be effectively used for treatment of back pain.German researchers have found that nearly fifty percent of people felt relief for months those who were treated by acupuncture.Acupuncture works more suitably than the usual care. Researchers find that pain messages to the brain can be blocked by competing stimuli.
In the largest experiment on acupuncture for back pain to date, more than 1,100 patients were randomly assigned to receive either acupuncture, sham acupuncture or conventional therapy. It was found that In the real acupuncture group, 47 percent of patients improved. In the sham acupuncture group, 44 percent did. In the usual care group, 27 percent got relief.
Acupuncture is better for some of the diseases but real points in the body should be pointed out
for significant result

Exercise is equal to drugs aiding depression

Regular exercise may work as anti -depressant drugs according to researchers. In a study of 202 depressed adults, investigators found that those who went through group-based exercise therapy did as well as those treated with an antidepressant drug. A third group that performed home-based exercise also improved, though to a lesser degree. Importantly, the researchers found, all three groups did better than a fourth group given a placebo -- an inactive pill identical to the antidepressant. The new finding proves that there is a real relation between exercise and depression though doctors have not yet prescribed it as a real remedy for depression. Exercise may act as an alternative to medication for patients whose body is receptive to exercise.Supervised exercise may also be safer for some people, such as those with heart disease

Oral pills soon to replace insulin injections for diabetis

Researchers say that insulin can be taken orally by means of pills. Since it is found that insulin can be protected by
coating. Now the diabetics are taking insulin through injection or pump. Many diabetics have needle phobia, which can be eleminated by this new invention. People with type 1 diabetes rely on insulin injections.
About 700,000 Americans suffer from insulin-dependent diabetes, also known as type one diabetes. People who have insulin-dependent diabetes must take insulin, either by injecting themselves with a needle at least twice a day or by using a battery-operated "insulin pump." The pump is worn outside the body on a belt or in a pocket and delivers a steady supply of insulin through a tube that connects to a needle placed under the skin.
Let us hope that this invention should take shape early so that diabetics will get rid of injections.

Outdoor game and Children

A group of experts warns that the average health of children is detoriating because they are not getting chance to play outside. Due to change in time and huge use of computer games and hometask is compeling children to remain in home and enjoy. But this has an adverse effect on mental condition of children.

The experts say that play - especially when it takes place outdoors - is crucial to a child's health.
"Just as the epidemic of childhood obesity recently took the developed world by surprise, too much 'junk play' could (like too much junk food) have alarming implications for the next generation." The experts have called for a global debate on this issue. As all of you know obesity is an epidemic today giving birth to lots of allied diseases and matter of concern for many. It is not only affecting our health it is also affecting the living style as a whole. Outdoor games must be a solution to this. Outdoor game also boost team spirit.

Study: Quick walks may help smokers quit

As little as 5 minutes of exercise may help smokers quit smoking
A study showed that moderate exercise like walking reduced the habit and intensity of smoking.
"If we found the same effects in a drug, it would immediately be sold as an aid to help people quit smoking," said Dr. Adrian Taylor, the study's lead author and professor of exercise and health psychology at the University of Exeter.
Taylor and colleagues reviewed 12 papers regarding connection between exercise and nicotine deprivation. According to their research even five minutes of exercise like walking could avoid the requirement of nicotine for the smokers. Even desire for smoking reduced after the exercise.
"What's surprising is the strength of the effect," said Dr. Robert West, professor of health psychology at University College London. He said it was unknown how long the effect of exercise would last and other anti smoking techniques should be combined with the exercise to quit smoking.
According to my opinion anti - smoking techniques should combine with exercise to quit smoking.
