An implanted electronic device that can lower high blood pressure in hyper tension patients who have failed in application of drugs. An implanted electronic device like pace maker can lower blood pressure to 20 points in hyper tension patients in whom most drug treatment has failed. Researchers said by applying electrical pulses to the carotid artery in the neck, the device triggers the body's baroreflex system, which causes the heart to pump slower, arteries to dilate and the kidneys to excrete more fluid. 20 point reduction is associated with 50 percent lower risk in heart attack and stroke. If the efficiency of the device will be tested positive it may be used by 2 million Americans those are unable to keep their blood pressure under control.
Elimination of use of drug to deal hypertension will be a great achievement. The new device was developed by physiologist Robert Kieval, who founded CVRx Inc. of Minneapolis in 2001 to commercialize it. The device, called the Rheos Baroreflex Hypertension Therapy System.
The surgical implant takes about three hours under a light anesthetic so that the surgeon can check the response of the body to placement at various sites along the artery, finding the one that provides the best response.
The battery in the device lasts for 18 to 24 months and not rechargeable.
Application of the device showed positive result in patients in America and UK who were taking drugs for blood pressure treatment Without any side effect. If the tests on patients become successful then it will be a good news for blood pressure patients who are testing several drugs for hypertension treatment.
